ABOUT BOX OF LIGHT:
BOX OF LIGHT was inspired by a science fiction story that I read in the New Yorker by E.M. Forster called “the Machine stops”. The short story depicts a dystopian future where humans loose their ability to think, breath or survive on their own without being connected to the all powerful, godlike “machine”. I was surprised to learn that the story was written long before the invention of cellphones or even television because it so eerily mirrors so much about my current reality. In this reality, despite my beloved community of family and friends, I still find much of my information is filtered through various glass screens. I am deeply immersed in contradictory feelings of co-existence and isolation. I want the machine to stop but I also want to know what it and you are doing at all times.
Box Of Light appeared in my mind on February 2016 in the living room of a house I rented for several days while I was touring in in New Orleans. At the time I was writing a song a week as part of a songwriting circle. The theme of that week was to write a song on how technology shapes your life. It was a theme I had put into the hat and hoped would be picked.
My fascination with technology and media affects was sparked years ago in the Media Ecology program at New York University. I realized in those years of study, that most of what I knew to be true about the world and myself was a faulty construct shaped by institutions, corporations, language and signs. Since graduating, I have continued to observe myself and the world, sharing my findings through songs that I perform on the stage. I feel that when we sing together we transcend the isolation of technology, of life and for a moment in our harmony, we are ONE.

BOX OF LIGHT
Liah Alonso c.2016 ASCAP
I keep stopping what I'm doing to look down
at my phone?
and i wonder who I'm fooling
because i still feel alone? . I try to pretend
I've got thousands of friends
on the various ends of the earth? do i know what its worth
to stand still with just one, take a walk in the sun? take a rest, take a breath, have some fun?
I keep checking on my Facebook on every single apparatus
i just have to know my status has it changed?
do you like% the pic i posted? Did it make you feel inspired
could you tell that I am wired to this screen? and i cant get unplugged
its the sneakiest drug?
when you're getting your love from a box of light
that you'll one day replace ‘cus its gone out of date i just want face to facetime.
Can I get off the timehop,
make all the sound drop, make this machine stop?
I cant get unplugged its the sneakiest drug i keep looking for love from a box of light...
